JJD (Jack Duckworth) is a Canadian musician, visual artist and graphic designer who has been based in the UK for 12 years, with the most recent 3.5 years in Glasgow. For around 25 years he has been involved in the underground music scene, starting with the DIY underground punk/hardcore scene in North America and then moving into more post-punk/synthesizer based music in the late 90s, right at the start of the first wave of the post-punk revival.

JJD currently releases music under the name Soft Riot, a synth/darkwave project that he started as a side project in the early 2010s. Since then Soft Riot has toured Europe numerous times and has released seven full length albums with the two most recent on Possession Records, a small independent label that he runs out of Glasgow.

Parallel to his musical output, JJD has had a career as a graphic designer and web developer for over 20 years, establishing his own studio after relocating to the UK under the name JJD Works, releasing a wide variety of creative output for clients from all over the world.

Tying all of these elements together, JJD has more recently started to work more and more in the video medium, creating music videos and short films utilising his skills as both a graphic designer and a musician.

For this evening JJD will be screening a selection of promotional music videos that he has created and released as Soft Riot along with two “short films” promoting releases on Possession Records. These short films are a creative progression of output from work he’s done in the music video format, creating a bizarre and surreal cut-and-paste video collage that combines elements from the traditional music video, parodies of television, film and consumer culture along with strange surreal interludes.

JJD will give some background to how the videos were created along with the creative inspirations behind them. There will also be a Q&A after the screening.

Finally, there’ll be a raffle for a select number of merchandise goods from Possession Records, including an LP version of the newest Soft Riot release When Push Comes To Shove, Voidamol travel tin packs and possibly more.
